Northern line train evacuation at Clapham Common

I understand that about the subsurface lines obviously, but could anyone really get out of a train and away in a deep-level tunnel? I guess you could just about squeeze out if you were agile and there weren't other people trying to do the same

Paddington to Plymouth in 2.5 hours?

The stats (22/23) show its down about 15% pre covid, where Exeter and others are back to where they were... anecdotally as well, when I catch the train, you don't see anything like as many groups of people obviously off to business meetings in London, which there used to be loads of in the past...

    Moorgate to Farringdon (parkour video)

It's a good 500m or more from Barbican to where they come out of the restaurant on Cowcross Street, roads to cross etc which are all missing. No chance that they caught the same train

Paddington to Plymouth in 2.5 hours?

Is that based on ticket sales from Paddington? I'm pretty sure that tickets to Paddington from Taunton are something like 50% of all journeys from there which would be a lot more than 130k

Northern line train evacuation at Clapham Common

And how would opening the doors help? Except on the newest sections there's physically nowhere to go

Paddington to Plymouth in 2.5 hours?

The current timetable is, as far as I'm aware, the most frequent the SW has ever had. Have prices gone down?

Where else in the UK could tramways/light rail be installed?

Absolutely. Solid rock is easier to tunnel through, not harder. Drill and blast is much cheaper than using a TBM, and often it needs no lining at all. That's how Norway digs tunnels for £10m/km

Paddington to Plymouth in 2.5 hours?

I wonder what the effect on numbers of passengers would be if journeys to Cornwall got speeded up by 15 minutes vs journeys to Taunton and Tiverton getting much slower (which they would if they all went to Westbury etc.). Positive or negative? Both in passenger numbers and revenue

Paddington to Plymouth in 2.5 hours?

I'm slightly puzzled why the topic of getting to Plymouth quicker keeps coming up. It's not a particularly busy station, and the train service is already far quicker than any alternative means of transport. Why do other places deserve a worse service in order to get there marginally quicker?

The San Jose BART extension and making changes to cut costs

Yes, all the current extensions in Paris are being built as double track tunnels. I believe all the recent new lines in France have used TBMs and built double track tunnels.... New lines in Sao Paulo and Santiago are currently being dug that way. Milan's newest metro lines definitely were, as...

Do you think that the UK switching to electric vehicles is realistic?

That doesn't match this recent announcement: https://www.zap-map.com/ev-stats/how-many-charging-points Do you have any sources for your statements?

The San Jose BART extension and making changes to cut costs

There's lots of double track metro tunnels in the world. Spain almost always builds them that way, most of the French metros are, and most Italian metros. That also applies to places influenced by the those countries - Latin America especially.

20 mph Zones - Extend or Eliminate?

OK! I clearly need to work on my fitness then, I ride my bike a fair bit but my average speeds tend to 15-18mph. I would still say that 20mph is a lot faster than anyone taking their kids to school or doing the odd journey to the shops though, and those are the journeys that could easily be...

Who would be liable if thieves are injured or killed when stealing from railway premises?

It's down to differences in the legal system. In the UK it is the responsibility of the landowner to keep people out. In many other countries it is the responsibility of people not to go where they shouldn't. Probably dates back to the enclosure acts or something even more archaic

20 mph Zones - Extend or Eliminate?

Ok, what proportion of cyclists do you think could be capable of that sort of speed on a flat road? I don't think it's many, especially not of people just going to work or the shops

20 mph Zones - Extend or Eliminate?

People out riding expensive road bikes perhaps, but hardly any utility cyclists will come close to 20 except down a decent hill

The San Jose BART extension and making changes to cut costs

BART and Muni have next to no vertical separation, at least in the stations, there's only the floor between them. The BART platforms are much wider though, so they are horizontally separated

The San Jose BART extension and making changes to cut costs

Thanks for posting, that's a fascinating article. Having used it a few times I'm surprised it was tunnelled rather than cut and cover, there doesn't seem enough vertical space between the two rail levels

The San Jose BART extension and making changes to cut costs

The plans in San Jose seem to be driven far more by wanting to minimise surface construction, rather than strict engineering need or cost. Which seems an odd thing to focus on, especially as San Jose has plenty of surface parking and empty lots which could be used without causing much...

    Generational moment ...

I'm not sure tender would ever have been all that common a term, you would surely have had to be interested in railways in the first place. I know that was more common previously when there were less distractions, but you would have to be ~65+ to have any serious recollections of working steam...
