    Trivia: Historically longer bus routes

Similarly the 12, which used to run Maidstone to Rye, but now terminates at Tenterden. In both cases, the southern section was an East Sussex tender lost (or deliberately not won) by Arriva bolted on to an otherwise commercial service.

    Carousel Buses (Go-Ahead group)

None of the sample timetables I found online suggested a half-hourly service, but clearly you used it as such: Would you mind saying what sort of time that was? As council funding is sometimes noted on timetables, I wondered if it was worth seeing what the web archive came up with.

Bus max load display. Still mandatory?

Aren't the maximum capacities worked on a purely weight calculation basis, not physical space? They are in a variety of positions - you may find it is tucked away above the driver's head, only visible if you duck below assault screen fittings. Above the door is another common placement nowadays.

    Stagecoach South & South East

I'll have to unbury the box again, but there is probably something in there to check (unless anyone else gets there first). Whilst being slightly fuzzy on the details that far back (too young to have experienced), the University service as a standalone service never really seems to have taken...

    Stagecoach South & South East

The 601 was indeed the University Bus (branded "The Beagle" - a reference to Darwin, after whom one college is named) in 1990. It fitted in a logical order, because in much the same sense as until last weekend, the 602 and 603 were services to Faversham, so the "1" was the first service out of...

    Carousel Buses (Go-Ahead group)

The 275 does seem to have long been among the weakest, if not the weakest inter-urban service leaving both Oxford and High Wycombe, so it doesn't come as too much of a surprise. Presumably there is more to it than just Carousel being based in High Wycombe for those positioning journeys, and they...

How could heritage railways encourage more visitors to arrive by public transport?

@paul1609 I see the KESR website has been updated as per our exchange earlier in the year (posts 131 and 232 refer), but unfortunately, the information is still incorrect! The 312 does not (and has never) operated to Hastings, it goes to Rye. I also think it would be helpful to highlight just...

    Stagecoach South & South East

600 series numbers do have a small degree of history in the area, as Canterbury services were allocated numbered in the 600s during the NBC (National Bus Company) era, many of which stayed on for some time afterwards (and indeed, still do in Arriva territory). However, the 400 was a service...

Is it possible for Network Rail to force the golf club to provide step free access at Seer Green?

I'd suggest that it was entirely dependent on ownership of the relevant land, and what covenants and rights of way there are over the gateway. It could be, for example, that there is an access agreement via the platform were the main drive to the Golf Club to be blocked, for example, or likewise...

    Recommendations for northern Germany

Excellent! I couldn't remember where the works were between Rendsburg and Felde and wasn't aware of the webcam. I lived there in the period between 1992 and 2014 (!!!) when the bridge was heavily refurbished and spent most of that time with at least one side covered in plastic. It seems the work...

    Recommendations for northern Germany

It's been a few years now since I've visited, and a few more since I lived there for a couple of years, but Schleswig-Holstein was my "German home", so I certainly know how things used to be. Agreed the Rendsburger Hochbrücke is a great thing to travel over - although I'm not sure what the...

    Reading Buses and Thames Valley

There is nothing about it in Robert Williams' (Reading/Thames Valley CEO) March update on April 8th. The ticket machine it is currently carrying has only tracked briefly on 15th and 17th April, so I'd guess it was a relatively recent arrival. If you're not already a member, Robert posts a...

    London Buses Discussion

The words "East", "Thames" and "Buses" are springing to mind for some reason here...

    Build Quality of New Models

I may be musing out of the wrong window here, but a similar question to this came to mind having attended a couple of recent heritage events. It was very noticeable that despite what we may think about modern buses, there was much more engine noise audible in the "passenger compartment" of the...

"Out of form" (i.e. non-ADL) Stagecoach orders

The Scania Omnicities were purchased when the London operation had been sold and operated under the "East London Bus Group" name. They thus weren't new to Stagecoach. Dennis being a precursor of ADL, these don't count! Stagecoach also bought hundreds of the type new. One in service, one not...

    Landslip between Edenbridge and Tonbridge

Someone seems to have it in for this area this week. I'm not local enough to check for myself, but Ensign have generally had a bus track most days for spare duties, which had led me to check roadwork information. Leigh station is currently inaccessible owing to an emergency road closure for...

    Landslip between Edenbridge and Tonbridge

If I've got the yesterday's correct and you took this poster on Monday evening, whilst it was indeed incorrect for Monday it *is* correct for the start of service Tuesday onwards, where, according to Southern, the rail replacement bus now runs the entire length of the Tonbridge - Redhill line...

    Transdev Blazefield

With respect, that sort of 'toy throwing' reaction doesn't do your more general comments on the app or services provided any favours at all. The previous point is very real, though: people did manage for years without checking social media, they still do where companies don't have it, and they...

    Gravesend Tilbury Ferry

A reasonable point, but a) you wouldn't give staff notice before you had decided to turn down the extension, and b) are you aware that the staff have been given notice? Jetstream operate in the leisure market, and it seems more likely the staff will be retained for non-contract operations...

£2 fare - but what next?

I have heard it suggested, both in general circles and specific to the bus industry, that cash is still the preferred medium of payment for those on a limited budget. Essentially, cash is not there to help you spend, it's there to stop you spending: you have a finite amount, and when it runs...
