Speculative could 222s be rebuilt as multimode

Rebuilding Meridians as bi-mode is as unlikely as previous suggestions to modify Voyagers. The primary issue is that there is no power distribution between vehicles in 22x. So you could convert a car to have a pantograph and a transformer, but you’re only going to get propulsion from that car...

Do you think that the UK switching to electric vehicles is realistic?

They were comparisons with the costs of using a car club. Where most of these costs get bundled into the hire charges. Though it looks like the car club costings were rather underdone. I have a colleague that's been doing similar calculations as their current car is getting towards the...

Do you think that the UK switching to electric vehicles is realistic?

You’ve got a very cheap car club near you then. Co-wheels in Oxford is £44/52/59 per day depending on the size of car, plus 23p/mile. So if you manage those 2,000 miles, you’ve got just over 13 days to do it in a city car before you hit the running costs of the banger.

    Football

Manchester United is one, Liverpool the other, unless they had one put in during their most recent redevelopment?

    Football

I mostly agree, though I think I'd argue against 4. Having VAR staffed by people who are also referees in other weeks means they have the experience out on the pitch and hopefully are making decisions consistent with what they would on the pitch.

Elizabeth Line Platform Gaps - BBC News

If you look at the picture at the top of https://www.imeche.org/news/news-article/mind-the-gap-keeping-trains-and-platforms-level-is-a-'complex'-issue for example, you’ll see the train bulges out above the normal level of the platform.

    Eurovision 2024 discussion.

Apparently it was an internal job by BBC Music this year. The last few years they've partnered with production companies. But the same company managed to pick Sam Ryder (2nd) and Mae Muller (25th).

That was the semi-final, the pack for his radio mike fell off so he had to finish holding it in his hands.

    Russia invades Ukraine

Mostly. Arms exports are usually performed under a licence from the government, which may include restrictions on how they're used. Though in practice there's nothing to stop them being used contrary to those conditions, it would tend to preclude repeat exports.

    Making top-contact third rail safer

The oft quoted footnote from page 3 of the ORR’s policy https://www.orr.gov.uk/sites/default/files/om/dc-electrification-policy-statement.pdf I don't know where you would find said document to get the raw figures, or if there is a newer version available.

Do you think that the UK switching to electric vehicles is realistic?

Looking through https://www.oxford.gov.uk/parkandridesites the number of chargers at each site is 0/2/42/10/2. Even at the best equipped site, you're not going to be able to leave it plugged in all day whilst you're at work.

Do you think that the UK switching to electric vehicles is realistic?

Oxford may be an outlier with it's congestion issues, but offering workplace parking at all is being discouraged. The council hasn't imposed its levy yet, but my employer already has a 1.75% of salary charge for a peak time parking permit (which doesn't guarantee a space).

Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party.

What source are you using for your growth figures? Although 2023 was flat (0.1%), 2022 had growth of 4.3% https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/grossdomesticproductgdp/bulletins/gdpfirstquarterlyestimateuk/octobertodecember2023

    Locomotive haulage vs. multiple units

As you note, they do have a variety of services with different lengths. The problem GWR has is getting the full fleet out. Are they definitely getting all the 9s out, or are they having to sub 5s or 2x5s onto those and the scheduled 2x5 services end up with only a single?

Hounslow loop services should be improved

I think @DynamicSpirit was referring to the 'extra' time for turning around 8/12 over 4. The shutdown and setup are essentially going to be the same regardless of length, which would be the 5 minutes referred to previously. Unless there's something I'm missing, the only difference in timetabling...

The Germans were housing immigrants on the Bibby Stockholm in the 90s, the Dutch in the 00s. We're clearly just catching up to the rest of Europe how we deal with asylum seekers.

2024 Local, Mayoral and PCC Elections

Just those contested. Which was around 2,600 of the 19,000 councillors across all the different councils in England.

    GWR fleet procurement

As I understand it, the new buildings on platform 4/5 will include masts ready for electrification. Though as they're still discussing what to do with the main station building, it might be a little premature to think about masts on that side.

Keir Starmer and the Labour Party

And then he turns round and decides to treat the UK harshly because what is now our government wouldn't talk to him before he was elected? As well as Trump's team they're talking more widely to Republicans in Congress whose support would be needed for future foreign policy. A little cordiality...

HS2 Manchester leg scrapped: what should happen now?

The two countries mentioned; France has no annual car tax, Ireland has a similar system to the UK based on emissions that looks to be at an equivalent level (their top end is €2,400 (£2,060), ours is £2,365). The issue with just tolling motorways is whether it would dissuade people driving and...
