    Glasgow Subway new stock

Back in the day the Subway did a one-off special night - I think it was called The Underground Experience: must've been 1991 or thereabouts. Nobody else seems to remember it apart from me. Anyway; one boarded the train at St Enoch's I think it was. The train then took off round the circuit...

    25kv Return Current.

I've no idea to be honest; obviously there's a better way of doing things now, or at least in certain circumstances they're not deemed necessary. One for the OLE engineers to answer.

    25kv Return Current.

The current returns through the return conductor wire as per above. At intervals along the track you'll see a red-sheathed cable leading from a rail up to the mast-mounted return conductor wire, taking the return current. The booster transformers maximise the efficiency of the return.

Tourism : Hidden Gems within the UK .. where ?

Not the same ambience without the sludge. But returning to Shieldhall's old locus there are several billion hidden gems around the Firth of Clyde. Puck's Glen (just north of Holy Loch) is a favourite of mine, with the caveat that it's better if it's not belting down with rain (which it...

Tourism : Hidden Gems within the UK .. where ?

Not quite sure if they're still plying the briny blue waters of the Clyde, but a day trip cruise on the Sludge Boats are/were? a great attraction. It was possible to have a lovely meal amidst the spectacular scenery of the Firth of Clyde while the sludge was being pumped.

    The headspans' last stand

So... the headspan is going the way of the red phone box and the classic Routemaster, and it's back to portals. I suppose one benefit of all that extra steelwork is that should we ever have another war (God forbid) the GWML stuff could be melted down to make a few hundred aircraft carriers and a...

    The headspans' last stand

I've been following the various MKIII headspan replacement posts with some interest. Speaking as a headspan enthusiast rather than any kind of engineer or expert, I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to use a stiffer material to replace the headspan wires (which I believe are steel or copper) so...

    Eurovision 2024 discussion.

First year I won't be watching. It's not the Eurovision that I used to enjoy. (My humble POV which may or may not be shared.) Anyway - may a red hot chalk-duster of righteous wrath descend like a fiery meteorite and wipe the slate clean. Eurovision's days are numbered I hope. Despite that - and...

    Natural phenomenon you have witnessed?

Thank you. I trust that even now the powers that be are stoking the sun right up with anthracite fit to burst, ready for tonight's illuminations.

    Natural phenomenon you have witnessed?

My son got some spectacular views over Loch Lomond whereas I - in the Clyde Valley - had to make do with a slightly chromatic glow to the North. Having said that it transpired that the full shebang was visible directly above and if I'd just gone out I'd have had a ringside seat. I always...

    Members named after stations

Didn't RAIL magazine once have a whole sequential plethora of columnists coincidentally named after railway locations? Stewart Slane et al.

    Natural phenomenon you have witnessed?

Yes. In the 1999 eclipse I was working outdoors a little bit north of Berkshire, in the quaint market town of Bellshill near Motherwell. The effect I saw was dimness and a change in the quality of the light whereby the contrast was reduced and everything looked flat (like an underexposed video...

People buying houses with associated noise (churches, railways etc) and then complaining about the noise?

I remember the Minister of Rhu Parish Church having to explain to elderly parishioners that the bells would be ringing at unusual times (can't remember why) and that it wasn't an invasion. But I always loved the sound of the bells drifting lazily up the hill and similarly the sound of Class 27s...

Workings from multiple private sidings sharing a common line back in the day.

Yes. Having piqued my own interest by spending an inordinate amount of time poring over maps of Olde Glasgow's bewildering web of lines I think I'll take it further and do as you suggest. Thank you. I suppose there must have been some established protocols between the private operators. I've...

Workings from multiple private sidings sharing a common line back in the day.

Same principal but with many of these incredibly dense swathes of businesses and private sidings in the cities up until the 50s/60s, all feeding on to the same limited channel, it must have been hard to monitor conflicting movements.
