Great Central Railway News and Updates

Despite the obvious enthusiasm for getting on with double track etc to Leicester North - first we must get the Urban embankment built...then the Factory Flyover.....then the missing embankment North of the MML bridge....then get the track laid and signalling done...and shed moved!....but it will...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Yes all the infrastructure is there, they "just" need to swing the insulators through 90 degrees and put the catenary and contact wires up.

Another argument for a signal box at Leicester is that - hopefully - there will be more trackwork for a museum complex....eventually.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Just to confirm there is still no Catenary or contact wires around the Braybrooke supply site. The Three Arches (Ex) bridge site is now almost clear of construction/demolition activity.

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Well the GCR has been very successful in raising the funds so far to maintain and enhance its infrastructure. Not only has the Gap project seen three of the 7 phases completed, but there have been three bridges replaced either side of Quorn over the past 7 years. There has always been the aim to...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

That siding at Rothley was originally installed with a point at its south end but three years ago that point was removed to be replaced by a point at the North end - we are still awaiting it to be installed but there has been a lot of S & T installation work done. This change will also help...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Thanks Railfan We did consider painted weathering but, as we have 30 16t mineral wagons, they are naturally weathering before we can get them repainted! We are trying to get all 30 operational ( now got 25 ish), then have two per year going through the works.

Great Central Railway News and Updates

There was a class 20 on the other end as it is a public service and was well patronised on the Wednesday from what I saw. It is a school half term week and so there are daily services along the branch line.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

I think the present team, who have delivered the Kettering to Wigston electrification have done a really good job and I hope they are now authorised to get the section North of Leicester started. They have had to cope with the original contractor going bust, Mr Grayling pausing, stopping and...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

From the original post on this thread 7th Jan 2015....." The overall cost is set at £1.3 billion (original estimate £0.9 billion)". But there have been significant changes in delivery (or non delivery) since that time and, of course Carillion was the original contractor and they went bust!

Swanage Railway - Strictly Bulleid II (2024)

This must be the first time in over 60 years to have so many Pacifics (let alone Bulleids) in one place!

    Hsts in preservation

I must confess to a strong desire to see a preserved HST going along the GCR over the MML with a XC(?) or charter HST going beneath.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

The Three Arches Bridge has gone! The bricks and spoil has already been removed from the site. The embankments restored and new grass seed has been applied. There is still a discussion about whether a small steel access bridge will go in but at present it is not happening. I understand there...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Thanks for the updates - I will try to visit the Three Arches bridge tomorrow, there have been no passenger services over this weekend through Market Harborough.

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Hi Ryan You make several very good points and I'm sure the GCR will appreciate your feedback. However there have been quite a few staff changes recently and I don't know who you should contact apart from just going direct to Malcolm Holmes (the General Manager). I'm sure there is a contact...

    Train Tunnel for Filming

Yes there is a tunnel,(Barnstone/East Leake Tunnel) with track, on the GCR(N) just to the North of Loughborough. It is currently un-used as trains are not yet returned to running on that section so the costs may well be very low?

    GCR Bridge Project

Yes - this has been a longstanding ambition/aim/intent - especially when linked to the Leicester Railway Museum project. But it is also now linked to the Gap project because when looking at the potential timetabling constraints of running to the North from Loughborough, it turns out that the...
