Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

That depends whether the door problem that caused it to disgrace itself yesterday has been fixed.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Yes, on March 7th. This is only the third working day of the new timetable, and we've already had three different units. At this rate we'd have them all in service by mid-September.

701036. Just got on at Twickenham. Still smells very new.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

See post #9000, which has been kept up to date. Since moving to three round trips a day, (five days a week) 043 has operated 22 of the 34 days (65%), and since January 52/97 (53%) The last unit other than 037 and 043 was 036, on its one and only outing on March 7th

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

It's actually about 53%. And despite its - now four- failures in service it may nevertheless be the most reliable - it does at least manage to get out of the depot, which most of them haven't done at all yet.

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

Maybe it doesn't think it's scheduled to call there (for example if it's a Birmingham service but thinks it's a Chester service, it would think it's not supposed to open the doors at Milton Keynes

Train is not listed on RTT/NR

Could be for any numbver of reasons. Replacing a call in a cancelled service. Allowing a passenger on the wrong train to get off (unlikely for most passengers, but the railway may make an exception for a vulnerable one). Staffing reason?

Why are wagons left abandoned in sidings?

I would expect that most of them are parked up because there is something wrong with them (seized bearings or brakes for example) and they would need fixing before they could be moved. If that would cost more than their scrap value it's cheaper to leave them where they are.

    Caledonian Sleeper

100% of the times I have travelled solo on the sleeper (from Edinburgh) I had to share. A sample of one is, admittedly, not statistically significant.

Front headlights on at the rear of the train

I have pointed out to a guard that the train I was about to board was displaying a tail light at the front when it ran in to the station. He thanked me kindly and corrected the problem before we departed. I have however seen a train's lights switch from white to red before it came to a stand...

Front headlights on at the rear of the train

In the olden days it was the guard's job to move the tail light from one end of the train to the other. I doubt many guards are left who worked on 4SUBs though!

It is. And the 1036 to Holyhead is at Platform 11 (805001/004)

Other trains seem to be able to get from Crewe to Chester - 1V70 just reported at Beeston Castle It was - 3x2car. The leading unit 158719 has special decals (see Levenmouth thread)

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

In contrast, Levenmouth's first service has just arrived in Edinburgh within a minute of right time. (It was right tinme as far as Haymarket)

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

However, 1D83, the 1036 Crewe to Holyhead, is still shown as running (presumably the defect is on the up line only). If it does, it will be the first 805 in revenue service, by a single minute (as 1A16 is due out of Crewe at 1037)

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

Seems to be a problem between Chester and Crewe, rather than a problem with the ECS itself, as the preceding TfW service from Chester has also been cancelled. So anyone waiting at Chester who was planning to be on the first 805 in revenue service can't now get to Crewe in time to join it there.

How was passenger travel handled during WW2?

Many internees (enemy aliens who happened to be in the UK in 1939), and some PoWs, were transported to Canada and Australia, notably on the infamous "Dunera", (450 Pows, 2,000 internees) whose crew were court-martialled after their maltreatment of the passengers came to light. Some of the...

At least, the ECS to form it - 5B38 - is shown as...

    Noise on West London line?

Have a look at "Real Time Trains" to see how frequent, and at what times of day, freight trains run. (Passenger trains too, but hyou can look at the public timetable for that) https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/detailed/gb-nr:LTCHMRJ/2024-05-29/0229 (Note that those marked "Q" are paths...
