Carlisle, being so far from any other club, maybe with the exception of Workington when in the league, once had a song (still do??) "No-one hates us, we don't care" and were pleading for another club to "hate" them for the sake of a bit of rivalry!

I would have thought, although never in the same league (Scotland/England) they would have disliked the Gretna of years ago which was developed on "monopoly money" by a rich investor which then went bankrupt and demised. Happily there is a "new" Gretna (2008)!

There was a story that Brooks Mileson, having failed to buy Carlisle United, bought Gretna at a time that Carlisle were in severe financial difficulties. His plan (allegedly) was that if Carlisle went bust, he would buy Brunton Park and move Gretna there and rename them Carlisle. A plausible plan, there is no restriction on a club based in England playing in the Scottish League, Berwick Rangers were already doing that, and he must have thought he could win over the Carlisle Utd fans with the promise of big games against Rangers and Celtic and the possibility of European football. Carlisle Utd foiled his scheme by surviving and bouncing back into the upper leagues

Thanks for that, was a Micheal Knighton involved with Carlisle years ago too?

Yes, he was their owner/chairman for a period in the mid/late 1990s and even team manager for a time in 1997-98 before then "sacking himself". Brooks Mileson twice attempted to buy out his shareholding in the years immediately thereafter, but no deal was ever agreed.

Knighton ceded control of the Carlisle United club in mid 2002 after they'd gone into voluntary administration.

Maybe this should go in the "things that annoy you" thread, but has anyone else noticed that the BBC have taken the 'show scorers' options off the footy website and BBC Sport app when viewing the day's fixtures? A mildly annoying and backwards change!
I wonder who it was who decided to show the childish team club badge symbol in the scores section....<(

Harking back to "football banter" that cropped up recently on the thread, back in the mid-1950s, I started secondary school at St Bede's College in Manchester and at that time, the bus guard gave out paper tickets from his machine on which the initials of MCTD was shown (Manchester Corporation Transport Department?), but the vast number of pupils there were supporters of Manchester United and a school prefect told me that MCTD stood for.....

Villa are out of the Europa Conference losing 2-0 (6-2 on aggregate) to Olympiakos. Still they reached a semi-final in Europe, the only Premier side to do so this season. Next season will be much harder in the Champions League!

Bayer Leverkusen with yet another late stoppage time goal to maintain their incredible unbeaten record. Brilliant team to watch but they must give their fans heart attacks...

No, he's saying that because Palace and Brighton fans have a history of rivalry/bad feeling.

The Brighton/Palace rivalry seems to go back to the 1970s or 1980s, but I have no idea whether Brighton really had any other local rival - I can imagine there might have been some dislike of Portsmouth but that would be diluted as Pompey are far more concerned about Southampton.

Some of it started when Brighton turned the Palace chant of Eagles, Eagles into Seagulls, Seagulls. At the time Brighton's nickname was The Dolphins.
Pompey fans never really thought of Brighton as being anything to be concerned about, putting them on a par with Aldershot, Bournmouth and the like as far as disliking them. S...hampton on the other hand are a different matter.

That would suggest there was already a rivalry as the Eagles nickname only dates from the early to mid 1970s. Before that Palace were the Glaziers (not to be confused with the current Manchester United owners) and Brighton were the Albion.

I must admit I'm surprised that so many seem not to know the story. This article from 2013 explains all: https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...ween-crystal-palace-and-brighton-8611878.html
ISTR that the late Brian Moore soon termed it the M23 derby despite neither end of that road being especially close to the teams it (more or less) links.

That de Ligt goal was onside.
No it wasn't both De Ligt and Mazrouri were offside.

Mazrouri challenged for the header and DL scored the " goal"

The goal was correctly chalked off.

Gedge moved to Middleton at a tender age and went to school there, which probably explains his support for Manchester United
Yeah but everyone thinks he looks daft !

Kylian Mbappe has formally announced he will leave Paris Saint Germain at the end of the season. The favourite club to sign him is Real Madrid.

FIFA has offered peace talks with the World Leagues association in a bid to avoid possible legal action over the creation of the new Club World Cup. The competition which will take over the slot of the Confederations Cup is subject to this over players health being compromised over fixture congestion.

In news that surprised no-one, Andre Breitenreiter has left Huddersfield Town by mutual consent following relegation to League One. The club now seeks a seventh head coach in the 22 months since Carlos Corberan walked out on the first day of pre-season training.
