Should a new Northern Network Railcard be introduced?

What exactly is that meant to mean? It has more than the whiff of conspiracy theory about it.

Meanwhile, maybe most motorists don’t want to give up their independence and personal space?

Well quite. Especially as the biggest increases in motoring costs occured between 1997 and 2010 - so unless the OP is contending that the last Labour government was governing to deliver a "society run by and for the rich and powerful." it is a bit conspiracy theory-esque.

So it is.

I expect the reason it seems so expensive is that theres no cheap day return, even though the journey is perfectly reasonable for a day trip.

One thing's for sure, a railcard discount would bring it more in line with expectations.
Did you try split ticketing? Surely there is a cheap day return from Wakefield to Manchester then Manchester to Buxton

There isn't a 'cheap day return' from Wakefield to Manchester, or indeed anything cheap about making that journey. Some use of the Greater Manchester Wayfarer may help.

Quite. Like many medium distance journeys in the North, there simply are no reasonably priced options.

It's not even as though Leeds/Wakefield and Manchester are a particularly long way from eachother, however TPE's delusions of grandeur have to be paid for by passengers.
