A bit of a sub-question; did any pacers carry catering on any of these longer services? Operating a trolley onboard must have been an interesting experience, and they were a lot more common in the past compared to nowadays…

In a previous thread on the subject, there was mention of a 141 running Leeds to Doncaster vice a cancelled HST, which allegedly had a trolley on board. Not sure Leeds to Donny counts as "long distance" though, even if most passengers were for London!

The Music trains on the Penistone line usually had a mobile bar set up in one of the areas behind the cabs of the (usually) 3-car 144. Again, not really a "long distance" service though.

When 142s or 144s occasionally substituted for 156s - and latterly 158s - on Leeds-Settle-Carlisle services, there was frequently a trolley on board for all of part of the journey. In this case it was considered prudent to keep the trolley stationary in the luggage/bike area at one end of the unit. Some attendants would wait there for the passengers to come to them....but the more agile and adventurous ones would go down the train, take orders and then return to the trolley before taking the food and drink back to the passengers.

The same applied to the Leeds-Ribblehead-Skipton beer and music trains on Summer Saturday evenings....before they became 156s and eventually 158s.
