Difficult to beat the Class 89 - only one built and it has been preserved. Likewise Duke of Gloucester

8203, 8233, 8237, 8243, numbered ADB968003/001/002/000 in that order

HST have examples of every class from 01 to 09

That would be terribly confusuing, as the original 13101 still exists, (later D3101, no TOPS number carried as it was sold into industrial use in 1972)

That's the electric APT-P - "P" for pre-production (class 370). I understand the OP meant the gas-turbine powered APT-E (for experimental), which is now in the NRM at Shildon, which carried a few [passengers on demonstration runs but never went in to revenue service (or received a TOPS class)
1024px-ATP-E_IN_YARD.jpg

The class 44s haven't done badly at 20% (two out of 10)

Officially that was two units (albeit they usually ran as one train)

Taking "rare" as being 25 or fewer examples built, but disregarding class 59 as they are all still in service

Class 118 (triple) 0.3/15 (2%) one power car preserved
Class 106 (twin) 0.5/14 (4%) All converted to class 105, one driving trailer preserved)

Class 84 1/10 (10%)
Class 202 (hex) 2/9 (11%)
Class 103 (twin) 2.5/20 (12%)
Class 44 2/10 (20%)
Class 109 (twin) 1/5 (20%)
Class 48 1/5 (20%) converted to, and preserved as, class 47
Class 207 (triple) 4/19 (21%)

I believe one 22 nearly made it but was accidentally scrapped and D821 purchased instead.
Two toffee apples survive, 31018 (D5500) and 31101 (D5518), which started life as a toffe apple but then was converted to a standard 31/1 after an accident. I think NYMR tried to buy one too, although not sure why they failed to get one.

Tied with their diesel electric version the class 21. One languished at Hither Green for many years but was eventually scrapped.

Classes 21 and 22 (58 built) are the numerically largest classes of loco to go extinct.

In terms of individual vehicles, classes 111 (62 vehicles) and class 125 (60) and several EMU classes (35x4LAV, 10x6PUL, 17x6PAN 15x4REP)

The largest class to go extinct, measured both by units and vehicles, were probably the 2HALs (Class 402) - of which there were 100 units.

Has a 2HAP been preserved? ISTR that there were 173 of them.

If most preservationists at the time were not pre-occupying themselves with rescuing yet another Barry wreck or importing foreign steam locos then these and other rare diesels may have stood a chance of surviving!

Given their (Class 17 Clayton) record in BR service would any preservationists/preserved line have actually wanted them?!! Although 8568 seems to perform OK nowadays.

Yep....even though D8512/21/98 survived in BR service much longer than their sisters, working for the Derby Research Centre - latterly on the Mickleover test track IIRC.
Although, strangely enough, none of these (or D8568) is listed as being in BR service in my 1972 Ian Allan Combined Volume. All that were in service at 30 October 1971 were 8504, 8507, 8508, 8536, 8548, 8558, 8561, 8563 and 8565. I managed to spot them all!

IIRC, 8568 was sold into industrial service and 8512/21/98 were transferred to departmental stock some time before October 1971.

David Maxey, writing in the 1980s in Rail magazine, envisaged various rarity combinations on Settle & Carlisle railtours, culminating in the Co-Bo hauling the 2-BIL.

How many of the 15 Brighton Belle cars were preserved? Wasn't it almost all of them?

Yes, all fifteen 5BEL cars survive albeit in various uses and conditions.

This website has details - although it seems 8 years out of date by now, so does not reflect the recent restoration of a main line 5BEL

One car (Motor Brake Third No 290) was damaged beyond repair in a fire in 1995. The rest are all still extant.

Latest news on the restoration of a working unit is from 2023 (5BEL Trust)

According to "Blood & Custard" https://www.bloodandcustard.com/SR-5BEL.html the original, accidental, fire was in 1991 - it was scrapped in 1995 after restoration attempts were frustrated by vandalism including arson.
We nearly lost another one too recently - in poor condition and being sold from a difficult to access pub location and many expected it to be scrapped on site. It’s gone off to provide holiday (or restaurants?) accommodation I believe, at a place which has already restored other carriages. Not looking likely it will ever run again but at least it’s safe.

Yes, one at the NRM and one at Peak Rail
Peak Rail 2-HAP now sold & stored at a private secure site at Inverurie with D9500.

At Bo'ness they have the sole BR/NBL D27xx shunter, think there is only one 06 shunter.
Not the sole BR/NBL shunter, D2774 in working order at Strathspey Railway since 2001, formerly at the East Lancs Railway.

Is this the only NBL diesel class that has any survivors? (there are several steam, and one electric - 84001)

Yes - at Heritage Shunter Trust at ?Rowsley

Non-TOPS shunter classes according to various sources

D2/2 (Class 03)
D2/3 (see D2/13)
D2/4 (Class 04 D2200-2214)

D2/7 Hudswell Clarke D2500-09 (10)
D2/8 (Class 05 - D2500-73)
D2/9 (Class 05 - D2574-D2618)
D2/10 Barclay/MAN 225hp 0-4-0DH D2708-80 (73) - D2767 and D2774 preserved
D2/11 Beyer Peacock/ Brush 200hp 0-4-0 DE D2999 (1)
D2/12 Hudswell Clarke D2510-19 (10) - D2511 Preserved

D2/13 (Class 04 D2215-2341 - I suspect this may be a misprint for D2/3)
D3/1 NBL/MAN 330hp 0-4-0DH D2900-13 (14)

All other D3/x were variants on the Class 08-12 shunters

A class 22 power unit exists and was the focal point of a failed replica project.
There is another operational class 22 engine...

Class 310? 50x4car = 200 vehicles as well
Arguably 201, as an additional driving trailer, 76998, was built in 1975 to run with the undamaged vehicles from units 071 and 094, which had been in separate accidents. However, it did use parts recovered from intermediate trailer 70756, so may not count.

A similar rebuild (but from driving coach to intermediate coach) was done to restore 455913 to service after that unit was bombed by a concrete mixer, but in that case the vehicle kept its number 67301
