Have you ever considered uploading versions of your videos without the scrolling text at the bottom? I find it really hard to read and watch at the same time because it makes me feel dizzy and if I keep watching for long enough it gives me full blown motion sickness (I get the same effect but not as bad with subtitles on TV shows). I like the videos but can’t watch them because of this. It would be amazing if you uploaded a version with text and another without text.

I’d be tempted to tape a black shield across the bottom of the screen.

I have to say I very much prefer the text scrolling across; if the alternative was a voiceover that would render them useless to me because I'm cloth eared - I also tend to watch with the volume up to as close a level as possible to how loud the train noises would be if I was actually on board so a sudden voice on that is likely to disturb the rest of the family ( as well as making me jump! ).

I did the Theale to Bedford with no captions and got mostly complaints.

I'm sorry to hear you got complaints, it's something that really would make all the difference for people like me. I haven't watched that particular video but it sounds ideal and I'll take a look later.

It wouldn't have to be one or the other - presumably the raw video doesn't come off your camera with the scrolling text included so it would be straightforward to upload two versions to Youtube, one without text and one with. But I appreciate that it's a lot of time and effort to go to just to indulge one person who suffers from vertigo and motion sickness!

The low sunlight from behind is gorgeous, and really shows up the scenery well. And the "added bonus" was pretty neat! [waves arm up and down, "that's it, that's it!"]

For those who dislike the scrolling captions: why not just shift the window down a little so the bottom edge disappears off the bottom of the screen? Nowt to see then... gives the gnomes who live inside the bottom edge of your monitor something to read as well :)

I must admit I don’t particularly like the scrolling captions on the news but I’ve come to ignore them. What I can’t handle is signing - I know they’re important for some but I don’t hear a thing about the item because I’m distracted by the signing!

The last premier of the year tomorrow night (2nd December) follows a Class 802 through spectacular scenery up the Northumbrian Coast and into Scotland. 9S12 ran on time on what can only be described as a miracle of a day as it rained daily before and after my only opportunity to film it. The sea looks deep blue reflecting from the sky!

The attached screenshot is the view over the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick upon Tweed.

If you want to follow the timings, she’s running on time again today;

Next video won’t be until February due to various commitments so may I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Many thanks for this info and, as usual, I'll wait a few days before watching this new video. Obviously, I wish you a good Christmas and New Year too.

If it helps... I'm deaf, but I don't sign and I actively avoid anything broadcast with sign interpreters in because, yes, it's very distracting.

A little of topic but a genuine question, why do they put signing on TV instead of having the person with the hearing problem just put subtitles on like they would most of the time bar very late at night when they tend to put the signers on tv.

As far as i am aware it's due to an OFCOM rule which states that a certain percentage of programming on "mainstream" channels must be signed using BSL. It's part of their accessibility statement. Also, not all deaf people can read subtitles.

I'm deaf myself but I don't sign. I'm sorry some find TV interpreters distracting but they are easily avoided anyway. Can I kindly warn people here that sign language is a very very sensitive subject to many deaf people? Let's end this bit before it gets out of hand please.

Back to the cab ride videos - I quite enjoy them, scrolling captions and all! I find cab ride videos that don't even name the stations being passed through lacking

How can it be a sensitive topic? It's literally just a language. It's no more sensitive than English, or Mandarin, Lushootseed.

I have mixed feelings about the scrolling text. I find them a distraction from enjoying the view from the cab, but they also throw in some interesting nuggets of operational know how. So on the whole I think they’re worth it.

Although I sometimes find that the very thing they describe or comment on, we are going past it at the time so you need to rewind to watch what you were reading about. Maybe there’s a need to alter the timing?

I don’t know if you’re referring to my videos? The earlier ones might have been but all of the later ones are timed to finish before the event.

Just watched the latest one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ2gzKiUPGw. Super stuff, and an interesting route - thanks once again. Particularly impressive view of that wonderful deep vertical-sided cutting on the old GC section. The quality seems to get better and better; have you got a new camera?

As with so many Yorkshire locations it's shocking to see the amount of railway infrastructure that isn't there any more. All those hugely wide empty trackbeds where I remember four running lines plus sidings over much of it. Which of course then leads me to think that at one time it could have run up the H&B all the way to Crudworth and picked up the Midland there...

Surprised you say the Hope Valley is one of your most requested routes. It's a lovely run, but I'd have thought it was pretty well covered by now - mostly by your own efforts. (Me, I'm still hoping for Chesterfield-Rotherham by the Old Road to turn up...)

Scrolling captions: fine by me, and often useful (eg. I'd have missed the Empire Cinema without it being pointed out). Surely the people who don't like them can just shift the window down a bit so they're off the bottom of the screen.

I was very pleased with the new video because it showed the route via Rotherham Central bypassing Tinsley. Coincidentally, another video showing some of that same detour in reverse was uploaded at the same time: Tinsley to Doncaster Down Decoy.

Hope Valley is always a favourite and although we’ve seen it (I virtually live in it) there are a lot of people worldwide watching the videos and well, I’m not sure where they are but they keep asking. I keep getting asked for poor wether to which surprises me but in response, there will be some coming soon. AS for the captions, I don’t like them on the news but I ignore them too. You know what, both Vinny (Freightliner driver) and myself have been using my GoPro’s and we both prefer the GoPro 8. I’ve got a 9 which isn’t as crisp but I’m experimenting with 4K and to get 4K50fps, I’ve got to use the 9 as the 8 can’t do it. I’ve got some footage from the Calder Valley I’ll show soon - our current Pennine route as Stalybridge is shut. You might like the next video which goes to Barrow Hill via Chesterfield and I’ll show you Sheffield to Barrow Hill in a future video, how does that sound?

That Tinsley video was a remarkable coincidence but I was interested because I’ve never seen it.

Next video is Birmingham (Landore Street) to Barrow Hill via Derby. It was filmed on another cracking day in February this year.

More good news because, to the best of my knowledge, the stretch between Water Orton and Derby is not yet covered by a video with decent picture quality. There's an interesting historical video with lamentable picture quality of a rail journey from Derby to Westerleigh Junction, but it's really not good enough so your video will be very welcome.

Wholeheartedly agree with this! Have been waiting for this stretch of track to be covered! My old home line, will be great to see from a drivers eye view! Keep up the great work Don! Always a pleasure watching your videos!

Cheers, I do have that much of the Old Road already, but in the other direction, and it's surprising how different they can look going the other way. (As that coincidental Tinsley video shows very well - almost looks like a different route going the other way.) So definitely looking forward to those, and your continued good work is much appreciated!

You or others may also be interested in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OAW4q_hwsA which also covers Rotherham to Sheffield via the GC, from the front of an old DMU: same route but rather older, and it's interesting to see the differences.

I've just realised that no-one has asked when this video will go live. Any answers?
