Thank you Jesus

The actor and rightwing activist Laurence Fox has been ordered to pay £90,000 each in damages to two people he libelled by referring to them as “paedophiles” on social media.

A high court judge made the order in London on Thursday. Fox lost his high court libel battle in January, after Mrs Justice Collins Rice ruled that he had defamed two men by calling them paedophiles after they labelled him a racist.

The Reclaim party founder was sued by Simon Blake, a former Stonewall trustee, and Crystal, a drag artist, over a dispute on X, formerly known as Twitter, in October 2020.

Fox, 45, used the slur against Blake and the former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, whose real name is Colin Seymour, in a row about a decision by Sainsbury’s to provide a safe space for black employees during Black History Month.

The most hilarious thing about Fox was failing to get on the ballet for Mayor of London as he messed up the paperwork!

There's a Fawlty Towers joke to be made here somewhere...

Rat remains found in bread sparks Japan recall and refunds

One of Japan's most well-known bread brands is recalling thousands of packets and offering refunds after the remains of a rat was found in its products.

Around 104,000 packs of sliced white bread made by the Pasco Shikishima Corporation have been pulled from shelves. Parts of the black rat had been discovered in at least two packets.

Pasco bread is a staple in many Japanese households and a ubiquitous presence in supermarkets and convenience stores across the country.

There have been no reports thus far of anyone falling sick as a result, Pasco said in a statement earlier this week.

"We deeply apologise for the inconvenience caused to our customers, business partners, and all concerned parties," it said.

The bread was produced at a factory in Tokyo, whose assembly line has been suspended.

Pasco did not say how the rat's remains ended up in its products, but it pledged to "do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls so that this will never happen again".

The company has since published a form on its website for affected customers to apply for refunds online.

Its products are also exported to the US, China, Australia, and Singapore, among other countries.

Food recalls are rare in Japan, a country with famously high standards of sanitation.

However there have been several health scares involving food recently.

Earlier this month, hundreds of students in the north-eastern Miyagi prefecture fell sick after drinking milk supplied to their schools.

In March, drugmaker Kobayashi Pharmaceutical issued a voluntary recall of dietary supplements meant to lower cholesterol. The firm said last month it is probing five deaths potentially linked to the products, which contain red yeast rice.

Last year, the convenience store chain 7-Eleven apologised and announced recalls after a cockroach was found in a rice ball.

Mud you believe it!

BBC News - Council's beach safety buggy comes a cropper in Cleethorpes mud
The vehicle belonging to North East Lincolnshire Council's Beach Safety Team became stranded on Cleethorpes beach on Thursday.

The vehicle had been deployed to warn the people of the approaching tide using its speaker system, the council said.

Not for the thread Natural Phenomenon you have witnessed :D. "Aurora Premialis"...?

Two friends mistook the purple glow from a Premier Inn for the Northern Lights.
Initially thinking it was the aurora borealis, which made an appearance across the UK due to a rare solar storm, they soon discovered it was in fact the hotel.

For those in the UK (or certain parts of the UK).
Looks like we had summer today. Took a while to arrive but will probably vanish faster.
Managed a steady 35 miles on the bike with a customary cafe stop for tea & carrot cake.
Probably back to normal tomorrow. Oh well, nice while it lasted.

It was yesterday up here, but it only lasted until about 2pm though. I was out on the bike as well, did 26 miles. The first picture was taken a couple minutes before 2pm, the second one at 4pm:

Today IMO is the heaviest news day of the year so far: we started with news of the Iranian PM's death in the helicopter crash, then the infected blood scandal conclusions, swiftly followed by the ICC prosecutor's decision regarding political figures involved in the Israel-Gaza conflict. On a slower news day each of these would have dominated, yet today it was hard to tell which the bigger story was, and for all my knowing many other stories were drowned out by this.

I would say this thread is for funny or unusual news stories. It comes from News at Ten dating back decades - after news about death, destruction, mass redundancies they would end on a light-hearted note to try and cheer people up. They would start by saying, 'And in other news...' - the title of this thread.

Anyway, my 'other' news today is about subsidised Kebabs in Germany.
Cost of kebabs has become something of a running joke in German politics, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz remarking that everywhere he goes he is asked about it.

Should the government subsidise kebabs?
That's the question in Germany at the moment amid fears the price of the dish could surpass €10 (£8.60).

The German Left Party has reportedly proposed using state funds to cap the price of kebabs at €4.90 (£4.20) - and €2.50 (£2.10) for young people.
The meaty flatbread meal - one of Germany's de facto national dishes - currently averages around €7.9 (£6.80), a number that the Left Party says is going up with inflation.
The cost of kebabs has become something of a running joke in German politics, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz remarking that everywhere he goes he is asked about it.
Kathi Gebel, a member of the Left Party's executive committee, told BILD: "When young people demand: Olaf, make the kebab cheaper, then it's not an internet joke, but a serious cry for help!
"The state must intervene so that food does not become a luxury item."

The newspaper cited a report from Ms Gebel's party, which says that 1.3 billion kebabs are eaten in Germany every year and the proposed subsidies could potentially cost "almost four billion".

Rents and electricity costs for kebab shops are rising, pushing up prices for consumers, the party says.
In the UK, people buying takeaways have faced soaring prices, with the boss of Deliveroo saying in March that food inflation was outpacing wage inflation by about two to one.
The UK government has not made any commitment to a kebab price cap.

They're all arguing about who should be the doner.
