What is this on a Pendolino?

Intrigued as to what the pictured sensor is - there seems to be one in every coach on the Pendolino. Are they light level sensors? If so how do they differentiate between internal and external lighting?

(Picture is an odd round sensor mounted in this case on the end of the pantograph well of Coach U, but they are on coach ends in other coaches)

You're correct they're a light sensor, supposed to make the lights more ambient...

I don’t think that is permitted in newer rolling stock. It all has to meet latest standards.

397s have adaptive saloon lighting and I'm pretty sure it's a new feature on refurbished Pendolinos.
