Friday 13th April 1979

With significant numbers of HSTs already in service, time was running out for Deltics operating the top express services. The 1800 from KX was one of the last of these services and was my favourite because it was booked non stop between Doncaster and Darlington, offering the opportunity to travel through the middle roads at York. Today No.3 appeared with its recently adorned ‘white cabs’.

I can't find 0812 Doncaster-York in the timetable, though 0550 Kings Cross-Aberdeen should have been off Doncaster at 0820.

I no longer have a copy of the 78/79 timetable and so it could be a typo error. All I do know is that during this period there was a 0700 York-Doncaster (MON-FRI) service (usually loco hauled) which returned to York from Doncaster at 0812.
I have a 76/77 timetable and it appears as the 0815 Doncaster-York.

Thanks. I have now realised that I was looking at the 1979/80 timetable in error. In 1978/79 you are right there is a 0812 Doncaster-York with the following 0550 Kings Cross-Aberdeen not calling at Selby.

It does seem to be a strange working to be loco hauled not a DMU.

Yes, you could say so. It could get any sort of traction, anything that was spare at York. However I covered the train three times in this particular week and it was a unit twice. The usual Mark I set was probably being used on Easter relief trains.

After arrival into Edinburgh at 0400 ish my normal fill in move would be to take the 0435 to Glasgow. Today I had the unexpected pleasure of taking 40101 to Dundee which was working an additional to Aberdeen. The engine and stock was then booked for a relief to KX. At Dundee I picked up required 40162 working the first QS stopper.

I never had any real success in getting to Cleethorpes with a Deltic. Today I was travelling south from Doncaster with Deltic 10. It wasn’t my intention to go to Cleethorpes, however as I travelled further south towards Peterborough I realised that the KX-Cleethorpes had not passed by. On arrival at Peterborough I saw a Deltic approach from the south, so I leapt off and dashed over the bridge to find No.14 at the head of the train. Unfortunately for me No.14 had been released from it’s previous train at KX and attached to the Cleethorpes train without being refuelled. The question now was, how far would it get? The answer was Lincoln. After departing from St Marks station the train pulled to a halt close to Lincoln depot where a pair of 31s were attached. Somewhat disappointed I thought that I would now be stuck with them to Cleethorpes and back. Fortunately No.14 was quickly refuelled and followed the train to Cleethorpes where it was attached to the stock and returned to London.

Having travelled on the 2315 from KX I was expecting to leave the train at Edinburgh but my plans soon changed when I saw Deltic 8 waiting to take the train forward to Aberdeen. I headed north with the Deltic, returning to Edinburgh later in the afternoon. I was then very happy to see No.9 at the head of the 1700 to Aberdeen. This was booked to return south with the 2125 KX Sleeper Only as far as Edinburgh, however if the train was Deltic hauled it would usually work throughout to London, something that I had been wanting to achieve. I travelled north again and on arrival at Aberdeen I went to the travel centre to book a sleeping berth. Unbeknown to me at the time Aberdeen had an EH only 47 that they needed rid of. The only train it could work was the 2125 sleeper which had dual heating. A schoolboy error was now made here by not observing the 2035 service to KX. This departed with 55009 which left me with 47701, the question now was what would replace it at Edinburgh, a Deltic or another 47?
